Our
Swabian Children's Cancer Centre

For the Swabia region, we are the Centre for Paediatric Haematology and Oncology. We diagnose, treat, care for, and conduct research into blood and tumour diseases affecting children and adolescents. What distinguishes our team is the exceptional commitment, compassion, and understanding shown by all staff members towards our patients and their families during this difficult time.

At the Swabian Paediatric Cancer Centre, children, adolescents, and young adults with a wide range of cancers are treated and supported. This includes children and adolescents with malignant blood disorders (leukaemias), tumours of internal organs, the brain and the musculoskeletal system, as well as congenital or acquired disorders of blood formation (anaemias, bone marrow diseases), bone marrow failure, and disorders of blood clotting (e.g. haemophilia, von Willebrand syndrome, thrombocytopenia).

Each year, we treat around 70 to 80 patients with newly diagnosed leukaemia or tumour diseases, as well as patients experiencing a recurrence of cancer. Children with severe congenital or acquired blood disorders are often treated and cared for by our team for many years, sometimes even decades.

Our shared goal is the holistic care of children and adolescents with cancer as well as acute and chronic diseases of the blood-forming system. An essential part of this approach is the close involvement of parents in the care of their children, supported by our nursing staff and our psychosocial care team.

Our Aim

Our common aim is to provide comprehensive care for children and adolescents with cancer and acute and chronic diseases of the haematopoietic system. An essential part of this approach is the care of children by their parents, but also by our nursing staff and our psychosocial team.

The Team

Our treatment team consists of paediatricians specialising in haematology and oncology, specialist nurses and psychosocial services, all of whom work closely together.

Maximum Care

Interdisciplinary Team

The comprehensive clinical care of children and adolescents is provided by an interdisciplinary team at Augsburg University Hospital, consisting of paediatric oncologists, paediatric radiologists, paediatric surgeons, paediatric neurosurgeons, radiation therapists, nuclear medicine specialists, pathologists, ENT specialists, and ophthalmologists. At the Swabian Children's Cancer Centre, we have all the necessary diagnostic and technical resources required for treatment.

Clinical Trials

More than 90% of our patients are treated within the framework of clinical trials. These procedures, known as Therapeutic Optimisation Studies (TOS), represent the highest medical standard. They are continuously developed under the auspices of the German Society for Paediatric Oncology and Haematology (GPOH) and in accordance with international guidelines. For rare diseases, individual treatment plans are developed in collaboration with national and international experts.

Complex Findings

The complex findings of our patients are regularly discussed in the molecular/immunotherapeutic tumour board and in team conferences with all participating specialist disciplines. In the case of difficult therapeutic decisions, recommendations from the respective heads of the therapy optimisation studies are also included in the decision-making process. In order to ensure a high degree of diagnostic certainty, relevant findings are confirmed in a second central assessment
