Research for Better Cancer Treatment

The foundation for new, successful cancer therapies is laid in the laboratory. Here, we investigate how novel drugs and innovative drug combinations can improve the treatment of cancer. We are also working to better understand the causes of cancer.

The Path from Research to Treatment

In preclinical research, we investigate in the laboratory—that is, before the first use in humans—how new therapies might work. When we achieve promising results in the laboratory that have the potential to significantly improve treatment for cancer patients, these findings are translated into clinical trials. In hematology and oncology, for example, we test new drugs that could complement or improve existing treatment options.

What Makes Our Lab Special?

In our Interdisciplinary Laboratory for Experimental Cancer Research (InLEC), experts from various disciplines work hand in hand. This leads to innovative approaches for better understanding and effectively treating cancer.

The InLEC is a translational laboratory that directly links research with clinical treatment. This means that we not only conduct research in the lab but also draw direct conclusions that inform clinical practice and patient care. The close collaboration between clinicians and researchers helps implement solutions more quickly and efficiently.

In addition, there is a digital interactive platform, the Virtual Science Hub (VSH), where researchers can exchange ideas from anywhere and at any time, explore a wide range of topics, and network across disciplines.

Interdisciplinary Collaboration for Success

At InLEC, scientists from various fields—such as pathology, hematology, and oncology—work together to answer complex questions. This interdisciplinary collaboration enables us not only to solve isolated specialized problems but also to approach research holistically and from diverse perspectives.

Our laboratory is integrated directly into the hospital’s main building. This means that researchers and physicians are in direct contact and can respond immediately to new findings. This physical and professional proximity creates an ideal foundation for linking research and clinical care, allowing both sides to benefit.

Working Together for a Better Future

Through our interdisciplinary research at InLEC, we are making an important contribution to improving cancer treatment. By sharing knowledge and resources across disciplinary boundaries, we can develop new therapeutic approaches more quickly and effectively, benefiting patients.
