Neuro-oncology for children and adolescents – CNS tumours

CNS tumours in children and adolescents

Augsburg is a nationally and internationally renowned paediatric neuro-oncology centre. The care of children and adolescents with brain tumours is therefore a proven clinical focus of our centre. Together with other key disciplines at our university hospital (neuroradiology, nuclear medicine, paediatric neurosurgery, radiotherapy, neuropathology, etc.), we care for affected patients from Bavaria and beyond. We offer interdisciplinary consultations for children, adolescents and young adults upon diagnosis, as well as a second opinion board, which provides advice on cases from other national and international clinics.

In addition to the most common CNS tumours (low-grade gliomas), our clinic has a proven focus on the treatment of malignant brain tumours, such as medulloblastomas, ependymomas, rare embryonic tumours and AT/RT (atypical teratoid/rhabdoid tumours). We are a nationally and internationally recognised centre of excellence for the latter two tumour entities (Prof. Dr. Dr. Frühwald, EU-RHAB; Prof. Johann, CNS-InterRest).

University network

As a university network, we are involved in clinical trials within the HIT network (German Brain Tumour Network) of the GPOH professional association and cooperate closely with the reference institutions for the above-mentioned disciplines at national level (neuroradiology, neurosurgery, radio-oncology and neuropathology). This enables rapid coordination and decision-making, even in complex cases.

Brain tumour consultation

Our brain tumour consultation provides diagnostics and (initial) counselling for patients with newly diagnosed tumours of the central nervous system (CNS). In addition, we provide aftercare for patients following brain tumour treatment or with persistent (e.g. inoperable) tumours. In addition to purely medical aspects, this includes intensive, interdisciplinary exchange with our clinic's psychosocial team in order to comprehensively treat the non-organic consequences of tumour disease. We also offer second opinions and consultations.

Multidisciplinary collaboration

Our clinic actively monitors neurocognitive impairments following oncological therapies (such as radiation therapy) and works closely with the neuropsychological team to this end.

In order to be able to offer modern therapies to patients with difficult-to-treat CNS tumours, our centre is a member of the ITCC (Innovative Therapy for Children with Cancer) network, the Phase I/II network KIONET and the Bavarian Centre for Cancer Research.
